NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY VACANCY: INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICIAN PEROMNES GRADE: 12 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Positions is part of the IT Operations and Infrastructure group. This group is responsible for all IT infrastructure on all the University Campuses. The incumbent will have operational and support responsibilities relating to the physical IT infrastructure (cabling, switches, routers, servers, etc.)

JOB DESCRIPTION
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
·       Network support (SFIA level 3)
Identifies and resolves network problems following agreed procedures. Uses network management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics. Carries out agreed network maintenance tasks
 
·       IT Operations (SFIA level 2)
Carries out agreed operational procedures of a routine nature. Contributes to maintenance, installation, and problem resolution
 
·       Radio frequency engineering (SFIA level 2)
Assists with setting up, tuning, and functional checks of radiofrequency/analogue elements. Resolves faults down to line replaceable unit (LRU) level or escalates according to given procedures. Carries out user confidence checks and escalates faults according to given procedures
 
·       Systems installation/decommissioning (SFIA level 2)
Installs or removes hardware and/or software, and associated connections, using supplied installation instructions and tools. Conducts tests and corrects malfunctions, calling on help from more experienced colleagues if required. Documents results in accordance with agreed procedures. Assists with the evaluation of change requests. Contributes, as required, to investigations of problems and faults concerning the installation of hardware and/or software and confirms the correct working of installations
 
·       Change management (SFIA Level 2)
Documents changes based on requests for change. Applies change control procedures.
 
·       Configuration management (SFIA level 2)
Applies tools, techniques and processes for administering information (such as the tracking and logging of components and changes) related to configuration items
 
·       Supplier relationship management (SFIA level 3)
Acts as the routine contact point between organisation and supplier. Collects and reports on supplier performance data
 
The incumbent of the position will on a continuous basis be responsible for the following, to name a few
·       The maintenance and resolving of incident requests on the cabled and wireless network environment.
·       Installations of cable and wireless network environment.
·       Installation and support of telephony devices.
·       Installation of relevant IT peripheral equipment.
·       Various installations will take place within IT data centres.
·       Overseeing and involvement on various installation projects
·       Ensuring that all components installed and maintained are effectively monitored

Minimum requirements

Qualifications/ Job requirements
·       NQF5 and 1-2 years additional IT certifications  
·       Valid Code 8 Drivers license
 
Experiences
·       5 years’ experience in Infrastructure Project Management is essential, such as A , N
·       5 years’ experience Working in enterprise IT environment is essential
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Basic electronics skills are required
·       Manual dexterity, including the ability to do physical work is required
·       Must be able to differentiate between colours blind and able to work from various  heights
