Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To provide optimum, efficient and effective comprehensive (preventative, promotive and curative) primary health care (PHC) services to students and staff of the North-West University Vanderbijlpark Campus.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provision of PHC Services
- Daily comprehensive primary health care through clinical diagnosis, treatment, and care, as per the SANC, DoH and NWU policies, protocols, and guidelines.
- Referral of clients to other stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure the best possible care to them.
- Dispensing of medicines, as per the prescripts of Good Pharmacy Practice and Medicines and Related Substances Control Act.
- Provision of emergency health care on Campus and arranging for an ambulance to transfer patients.
- Promotion of healthy lifestyle and educational health campaigns on and off-Campus (e.g. Vaccination & Health Campaigns at Residences), including attending the River FM interviews for clinic health slots.
- Identifying health tendencies and possible health risks that can be detrimental to the NWU community and reporting it to superiors.
2. Management Responsibilities
- Drug supply management, to reduce wastage and ensure quality service delivery and availability of pharmaceuticals. Ensure that essential medicines are in stock.
- Perform periodical stock counts.
- Supervise clinic staff and ensure ongoing rendering of clinic services in the absence of the Head of Department.
- Keep accurate patients and clinical records.
3. Education and development Responsibilities
- Initiate and enhance health awareness at the NWU
- Identifying personal training needs and assist with arranging training. Ensure regular attendance of training to stay up to date with best practices.
- Effectively communicate & conduct awareness programs on Campus.
- Personal and professional development to improve quality of work through utilization of specialized knowledge and skills.
- Assist with relevant research conducted by both the Health Care Centre and the NWU, as well as other stake holders.
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12 (essential)
- Four Year Diploma/Degree in Nursing Science (General, Community, Psychiatric and Midwifery)
- Diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (essential)
- Certificate in the dispensing of medicine (Desirable)
- Registration with South African Nursing Council (essential)
- Must have a valid driver’s license
FUNCTIONAL EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience as registered professional nurse involved in clinical, patient centred health assessment, nursing care plan, appropriate intervention, monitoring and evaluation
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in HAST management, i.e., involved in the management of HIV/AIDS, STIs & TB
Functional & Technical competencies:
- Service focus with passion for comprehensive quality care provision
- A strong inclination towards client service
- Training and experience in sexual health programmes
- Ability to use information technology, including MS Office, e-mail and virtual platforms
Behavioural Competencies:
- Must have excellent communication skills (verbal and written), including report-writing
- Planning and organising skills
- Ability to be composed and perform under pressure
- Must have excellent interpersonal, team work and collaboration skills
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
