NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY IMPACT POSITION NUMBER: N000938 VACANCY: COMMUNITY LIAISON ASSISTANT PEROMNES GRADE: P12 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION This individual is vital to the unit in terms of interacting with grass-roots community partners (NGO’s, PBO's CBO's & FBO's), setting up relationships, investigating the status quo in a community, liaising with various stakeholders including local and provincial government and traditional leadership and assisting with training and research. This requires an experienced, diplomatic, and politically perceptive individual, that is familiar with the governance and regulatory environment of the university and the unit’s mandate.
Job description

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Have a driver’s licence and the ability to traverse different terrains.
·       Knowledge of community, culture and understanding of its functioning
·       Be able to understand development versus charity, a keen observer
·       Knowledge of asse1-based development approaches
·       The ability to handle public relations and do public speaking
·       The ability to organise meetings and write reports
·       The ability to understand the CE strategy of the NWU and sustainability
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Understanding of social justice and ethic of care
·       Personal integrity and honesty
·       Respect for all, enjoying community interaction
·       Responsible in upholding NWU values and brand promise

Minimum requirements

·       Grade 12 and a valid driver’s licence
·        Five years’ experience in internal intricacies of communities, an understanding of structures, cultures and being recognized by gatekeepers
·       Minimum three years’ experience in interaction with NGOs and civil society organizations
·       The ability to speak Setswana and other indigenous languages. 

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.      Attendance of public meetings with local municipalities, provincial government, and traditional leadership
2.      Liaison with internal stakeholders i.e., students and staff
3.      Coordination and organization of fieldworkers for externally contracted CE research projects
4.      Assisting with the registration, training, and support of civil society organizations as part of the Forum for Continuous Community Development (FCCD). As well as maintenance of FCCD database.
5.      Acting as an interpreter at meetings, facilitator during training and assisting with conflict resolution processes
6.      Assisting and scoping of environmental, civil society and societal issues in the province
7.      Ad hoc tasks
 
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
