NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: GEO AND SPATIAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: P002933 VACANCY: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A6/A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION This post is aimed at a senior agronomist position with the main task to establish an Agronomy subject group and finalise module development on the Potchefstroom campus.
Job description

1.      TEACHING AND LEARNING
·       Revising, developing and finalising agronomy module content for delivery in PC programmes
·       Teaching selected agronomy modules
2.      RESEARCH
·       Postgraduate student supervision and other recognised research outputs (conference presentations, publications in accredited journals)
·       Sourcing research funding from national and international funding agencies
3.      MANAGEMENT
·       Recirruculting the two BSc Agriculture courses currently on offer at PC
·       Ensuring that suitable and sufficient infrastructure is in place on PC.
·       Liaising with organised and commercial agriculture to ensure that the practical model of agronomy delivery through utilisation of existing commercial farming practices is in place and sustainable.
4.      COMMUNITY SERVICE
·       Social development / liaison

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Expertise in teaching of Crop Improvement, Agronomy and physiology of major field and industrial crops, Crop production systems.
·       Expertise in teaching Soil Sciences (recommended)
·       Supervision of Post Graduate students.
·       Research in Crop production/Agronomy and a proven publication record.
·       Expertise in the application of precision farming in agronomy.
·       Expertise in project management.
·       Interaction at a high technical level with organised / commercial farming.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·       Ethical conduct in all endeavours
·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills
·       Demonstrate leadership and management skills
·       Excellent interpersonal skills
·       Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU


Minimum requirements

·       PhD or MSc in Agronomy or related (including but not limited to Crop Production, Crop Protection, Plant pathology and Soil Science)
·       5 years’ experience in teaching Agronomy
·       5 years’ experience in Agronomy research
·       3 years’ interaction experience with organised commercial agriculture
·       3 years’ experience in Academic Management
·       Membership with the Soil Science Society of South Africa (SSSSA) and/or South African Society of Crop Production, or American Society of Agronomy(SASCP)
·       Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) - Agricultural Sciences
