NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION:FINANCE AND FACILITIES POSITION NUMBER: N001547 VACANCY: FACULTY ACCOUNTANT PEROMNES GRADE: 8 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION • To provide appropriate support to the Executive Manager of the assigned portfolio/s on the field of Financial Planning and Financial Management in accordance with NWU requirements, policies, guidelines, and procedures. • To coordinate the Financial Planning functions for the assigned portfolio/s. • To support the Senior Accountant (Support portfolio coordination) and/or the Manager Faculty Accountants (Faculty portfolio coordination), in fulfilling his/her tasks. • To stand in (act as Deputy) for the Senior Accountant/Manager Faculty Accountants in his/her absence.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Management and Leadership:
  • Coordinate the Financial Planning functions and processes for assigned portfolio/s.
  • Lead the Financial Planning team assigned to this position.
  • Attend the management meeting/s of the assigned portfolio/s as the finance specialist and provide financial advice, feedback and coaching, as and when needed.
  • Fulfil the acting Senior Accountant/Manager Faculty Accountants role in his/her absence.
2.      Financial Planning and Budgeting:
  • Participate in the budget planning process.
  • Manage and coordinate the annual budget process of the assigned portfolio/s.
  • Review project budgets and ensure the adherence to the NWU financial policy, guidelines and the requirements of the external funders.
  • Provide input regarding the financial implications and consequences to assist the Executive Manager and his/her management team with strategic decisions and formulation of business strategies (integrated planning function).
3.    Financial analysis, evaluation and reporting:
  • Prepare a consolidated financial report for the assigned portfolio/s and discuss the report with the Executive Manager.
  • Discuss quarterly the consolidated financial report with the portfolio/s management team during a management meeting.
  • Review and sign off on the financial reports requested from external parties.
4.   Financial control and risk management
  • Keep abreast of changes in NWU financial policies and guidelines and give advice on the interpretation thereof.
  • Oversee the KFS Fiscal Officer role.
  • Act as KFS Financial Reviewer.
  • Manage financial aspects of all external contracts, including sundry debtor’s management.
  • Manage control of physical assets.
  • Ensure that all system requirements in terms of half-year and year-end procedures have been met timeously and assist with the follow-up of financial/audit queries.
  • Evaluate the financial internal controls and the effectiveness of the processes and procedures in the assigned portfolio/s and seek and implement improved internal controls, processes and procedures.
5.    Ad hoc assignment:
  • Financial Planning office administration.
  • Personal development.
  • Delivering of other financial management tasks from time to time in coordination with allocated supervisor in the office of the Director of Financial Planning.

Minimum requirements

  • B Com Degree (with accounting 3 and/or Management Accounting 3) is essential 
  • 5-8 years Financial/Management Accounting experience in a medium to large size is essential
  • 3 years staff management experience is essential
  • Intermediate to advance proficiency in Microsoft Excel experience is essential
  • 3 years of completed articles is desirable
  • 3-5 years ERP systems (e.g. Oracle, KFS experience is desirable
 KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Proven knowledge of management, general financial principles, financial modelling and costing of products
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Proven high level analytical and interpretive abilities and problem solving
  • Report writing skills
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU
  • Excellent time management, organizational skills (including organizing various types of people), as well as ability to prioritize
  • Must be able to handle interruptions and changes (Ability to multi-task and still function effectively under pressure

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
