Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
In additional to academic responsibilities within the Faculty of Engineering, provide functional and academic leadership within the Faculty of Engineering with respect of business development and stakeholder engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategy Development:
- Co-determine faculty strategy and joint accountability for the implementation thereof.
- Jointly accountable for the successful implementation of the NWU Teaching and Learning strategy.
- Jointly accountable for the successful implementation of the overall NWU strategy.
- Translate the Faculty strategy, relevant to business development, into a site implementation plan and operationalise.
Community Engagement/Service- learning and Commercialisation.
- Implement coordinated and integrated research and innovation community engagement strategies rolled out across various state department, science councils and universities, with the private sector playing a key role on so-called quadruple-helix strategies where societies/people/beneficiaries are included in the process together with the government, university and industry.
- Steer the academic and operational management of the development, accreditation and offering of short learning programmes with the assistance of the manager: short learning programmes and short learning committee leader.
- Steer the Business Development committee as a standing committee of Faculty Board and reporting to the faculty executive and Faculty Board.
- Facilitate the development of strategies that will support the community engagement/service learning and commercialisation strategy.
- Facilitate the development and assist in the implementation of guidelines, strategy and process documents, including the coordination and communication of community engagement/service learning and commercialisation.
- Communicate and report on research-related community engagement/service learning and commercialisation management, as well as performance parameters and benchmarks.
- Manage both the marketing or research and the formal formation of collaborative community engagement/service learning and stakeholder networks.
- Facilitate the provision of an effective support service to ensure quality management for service
- learning and commercialisation support, including the facilitation of research ethics application.
- Joint accountability to update and review the faculty quality manual.
- Joint accountability to drive to integration of research outputs into community engagement/service learning and commercialisation to enhance professional qualification and graduate employability.
- Implement profitable programmes and initiate and sustain third stream revenue generating initiatives to increase financial strength.
- Project implementation under direction of the executive dean to optimise under and post graduate throughput quality.
External Relationships:
- Secure funding, professional recognition, academic development, employment, through effective local and international relationships with peers, higher education institutions, research community, industry, professional bodies and community.
- In consultation with the Executive Dean, position and promote the Faculty and ultimately the NWU Brand, through effective marketing and communication, relationships and local government, and community, industry, students, parents and alumni and other stakeholders.
- Promote and drive internationalisation and stakeholder network creations.
Management and Leadership:
- Faculty effectiveness and efficiency inclusive of infrastructure and facilities.
- Schools, Programme and Research entities effectiveness joint accountability.
- Joint accountability with leadership teams for management effectiveness.
- Stakeholder relationship development and effectiveness.

- Faculty effectiveness and systems implementation, utilisation, effectiveness and efficiency.

Minimum requirements
Minimum requirements
- A PhD relevant in one the relevant disciplines (NQF Level 10)
- Accreditations and Memberships of appropriate academic and professional networks
- Professional Registration where applicable
- Eight (8) years Middle/Senior Management experience in the relevant industry/ professional leadership
- Eight (8) years Middle/Senior Management experience in Higher Education
Other competency requirements:
Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
- Thorough knowledge of the RSA Higher Education system.
- Well-developed information and communication technology proficiency
- Acceptable management accountancy proficiency
- Acceptable contract development and management proficiency
- Acceptable knowledge of approaches to student access and support and curriculum design and delivery within the applicable academic fields
