NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF ENGINEERING SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL AND MINERALS ENGINEERING VACANCY: LECTURER -NGAP PEROMNES GRADE: A8 AA/EE: APPLICABLE POSITION NUMBER: P003069 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The nGAP position in the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering is part of the SSAUF initiative by the DHET to improve the academic staffing at South African universities. It is a prestigious programme to enable young black candidates to follow a career as an academic. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme on a permanent full-time basis under the University's normal conditions of service and will work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teaching and learning
  • Years 1-4: Be responsible for at least one chemical engineering undergraduate module, or equivalent responsibility in a laboratory supervision role.
  • Year 5 onwards: Be responsible for at least two chemical engineering undergraduate modules plus undergraduate projects, as per the annual task agreement
  1. Research
  • Years 1-4: Limited to own development,
  • Year 5 onwards: Progressively more research in a research group associated with the School, including post graduate study supervision, as per the annual task agreement.
  1. Personal development
  • Completion of postgraduate and research experience
  • Professional body registration
  • SSAU-DP participation
  1. Administration
  • As required / per task agreement

 

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES

Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)

  • Competent to teach any of the traditional chemical engineering topics up to final year bachelor’s level.
  • Competent to provide technical and educational assistance in a laboratory environment, included the necessary OHS awareness.
  • Possess the necessary skills (e.g. technical and administrative) to support School and Faculty administration

Behavioural Competencies

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills – interact with colleagues, industry, and students.
  • Professional and ethical conduct towards colleagues, students, and other stakeholders.

 

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.

Minimum requirements

  • B Eng / BSc Eng degree in Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy
  • M Eng / MSc Eng degree in Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy (70% minimum) Please attach your Academic Record.
  • Registerable with ECSA as Candidate Engineer  
  • 2 Years teaching and learning experience (Lecturing or teaching assistant)
  • 2 Years Research experience (Post graduate student or research assistant)
