Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The lecturer in Physiology will make contributions to the teaching and learning area of predominant undergraduate Physiology programs at the Potchefstroom Campus. The staff member will teach Physiology theory and practice to Pharmacy students.
The lecturer in Physiology should be experienced in lecturing of physiology related modules.
The lecturer should be able to:
· Implement effective lecturing of physiology modules using a blended learning approach
· Show innovation in teaching-learning excellence.
· Participate in activities in physiology related to teaching-learning
· Promote personal development and student guidance.
· Assist with the implementation of strategies regarding physiology for the undergraduate programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. TEACHING-LEARNING:
· Advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies in physiology and effective teaching-learning practices in the broader field of physiology.
· Advanced skills to design, develop, evaluate, and improve study guides and curricula as the need arises.
· Demonstrating advanced lecturing and practical skills in physiology.
· Conduct assessments (formal, informal, practical) on undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and give feedback to students.
· Participation and leadership in teaching-learning development and innovation processes within the University boundaries.
· Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national, and international levels.
· Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external to the University; and
· Any ad-hoc assignments given by line manager (school director), within the scope of practice.
· Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in teaching learning.
2. RESEARCH AND INNOVATION ACTIVITY:
· Purposefully develop own focused research expertise in physiology related teaching-learning or epidemiology/public health/interventional research relevant to the future of the Physiology department or Hypertension in Africa Research Team.
· Identify or formulate research problems and researchable questions in the applicable field of interest.
· Designing and conducting research projects, writing research reports, and preparing applications for research funding.
· Communicating research outcomes to experts through publishing in accredited refereed journals, scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences if possible.
· Contributing to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research.
· Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation.
· Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups, and organisations at local, national and international levels.
3. LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT, SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSUTY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIVENESS:
· Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees and working parties within the University.
· Maintain an involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through the application of pharmacological knowledge and skills.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Post Graduate qualification MSc in Human Physiology is essential.
· Physiology Society of Southern Africa and/or Health Professions Council of South Africa membership is desirable.
KEY FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
· Clear evidence of strength in teaching and learning in a blended environment and research and innovation activity.
· Knowledge, skills, and practical experience in the field of Physiology with an interest in a suitable field of Human Physiology and or Teaching/Learning research
· Excellent problem-solving skills with regard to the key performance areas.
· Computer literacy in Windows MS Office, use of e-mail and internet as well as a program for statistical analysis of data.
· Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Demonstrated ability of language skills to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU.
· Have excellent people and conflict resolution skills.
· Can apply time management and work independently (on their own and without supervision).
· Must be able to work well in a group.
· Demonstration of initiative and leadership in research and teaching and learning should be evident.
· The ability to maintain effective and constructive interpersonal relationships, as well as to motivate and persuade others to be effective, efficient, achieve agreed goals timely, behave harmoniously and become or remain interdependent.
· A clear vision, effective, clear, and timely two-way communication, a strong results and people orientation, instilling trust, driving diversity, transformation, and ethics, and managing conflict proactively.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
