Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
· The nature of the position is academic, so the person will be expected to engage in Teaching and Learning, Research and Community Engagement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Master’s degree in Language Practice, Applied Linguistics and / or relevant linguistics degree
RECOMMENDATION:
· South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) accreditation for translation, interpreting or editing
· South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) Membership
EXPERIENCE:
· 2 years’ experience in Teaching and Learning at an Undergraduate level
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Lecturing experience at a tertiary institution
· Excellent language and communication skills
· Competence in a South African Language (preference will be given to Setswana and Sesotho as official languages of the university)
· Ability to use teaching and learning technologies (such as an LMS) and basic computer software (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point)
· Focus of degree or postgraduate research (honour’s research essay or master’s degree) needs to be language practice related (i.e. translation, editing, interpreting, lexicography)
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Good interpersonal skills
· Student support experience (for example, SI facilitation, tutoring, peer mentoring)
· Good time management skills
· Good administrative skills
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and Learning:
§ Deliver high quality lectures and support to students
§ Set assessments and ensure students receive constructive feedback
§ Develop study material
§ Effectively and promptly assist students with queries and problems
2. Research:
· Complete relevant postgraduate studies
· Present research at applicable research conferences
· Provide postgraduate supervision and study guidance (when needed)
· Write and publish research articles in accredited journals
3. Community Engagement:
§ Share professional expertise to enrich the community
§ Membership and/or involvement with relevant professional bodies
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
