Job description

1. Practicals 
Preparation and supervision of undergraduate practical classes

2. Material inventory 
Preparation and keeping of updated material inventory

3. Assessment 
Setting and marking of practical tests

4. Record Keeping 
Development and keeping of updated practical class records

5. Occupational Health and Safety  
Insurance of safe and healthy laboratory practices

Minimum requirements

• Master of Science in Microbiology or related field is essential 
• Accreditations: South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNSP) is desirable 
• South African Society for Microbiology (SASMB)

EXPERIENCE

• 2 years’ experience running undergraduate practical’s is essential 
• 2 years’ experience maintaining material inventory is essential 
• 1 year experience keeping records is essential
• 1 year experience in Occupational Health and Safety is essential 
 
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)

• Handling of large and diverse groups of students
• Computer literacy, particularly MS Word, Power-point and Excel
• Interpretation of relevant undergraduate laboratory practical manuals and handouts
• Performing of any other duties as may be assigned by the HOD or Director

• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Effective time management
• Capacity to work under pressure
• Self-motivation and positive attitude towards others
• Effective attention to detail
• Ability to work as an individual and/or in teamwork set-ups

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
