Job description

1.    Technical leadership and reporting
·         Provide technical leadership in the domains of Language Technology and/or Digital Humanities, assisting the Research Manager.
·         Continuous research into best practices regarding digital language data acquisition, curation and management given rapid changes in technologies.
·         Report technical and research findings at management committee, steering committee level and other relevant forums
·         Lead the technical and commercialisation strategy of SADiLaR
2.    Technical oversight development and support
·         Responsible for oversight and actively optimising regarding the development and sustainable functioning of the various SADiLaR portals, which implies
Ø the maintenance and development of a multifunctional language resource portal for effective public use,
Ø management of all current and future digital resources available in the portal,
Ø application of standards to ensure interoperability of data at national as well as international levels.
·         Provide leadership to internal and external line functionaries regarding the development and maintenance of applicable processes and software for the effective attainment of SADiLaR goals with regard to digital resource acquisition and management.
·         Plan and manage all software development project within SADiLaR.
·         Liaise and cooperate with the Research Manager on all technical aspects related to resources and tools applicable to HLT and DH projects, or any related issue, and take necessary steps to mitigate problematic issues.
·         Liaise and cooperate with the Project Manager on any technical aspect that may inhibit and or influence planned delivery of any project at any of the Nodes and other SADiLaR related projects and seek solutions to alleviate the situation.
·         Operate as an active member of the Management Committee in attainment of the goals of SADiLaR.
·         Report to Director of SADiLaR,

Minimum requirements

·         Masters qualification in either General or Computational Linguistics, Human Language Technology, Computer Science or Information and Communication Technologies (NQF level 9)
 
EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
·         5 years’ proven track record in the development and evaluation of full-stack software development projects (Senior)
·         5 years’ experience in managing software application development (Senior)
·         3 years’ experience in liaising with external partners.
Desirable:
·         3 years’ commercialisation experience
·         3 years’ experience in driving development projects related to Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Human Language Technologies (HLT).
·         3 years’ experience in the acquisition, evaluation and distribution of language resources
·         3 years’ experience in presentation of research-based results related to HLT and/or DH at national and international conferences.
·         3 years’ experience working in a team environment.
·         3 years’ experience in the publication of peer reviewed academic papers and research reports.
·         3 years’ proven record of proposal writing.
 
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Technical knowledge of server infrastructures related to the functioning of data repositories and software as a service.
·         Knowledge of national and international standards applicable to the curation of language resources.
·         Knowledge and experience with programming languages applicable in the fields of Language Technologies and Digital Humanities.
·         Ability to produce high quality reports.
·         Ability to lead development projects
·         Ability to work independently and efficiently as part of a team
·         Ability to effectively liaise and communicate with the public, students and colleagues at various levels and from diverse backgrounds.
·         Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in multilingual environments.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Ability to manage staff and function within a distributed team
·         Able to function within a diverse work environment
 
RECOMMENDATON
·         Post-graduate qualification related to management of digital resources (NQF level 6)
·         Professional Status: PMI / Prince 2 – Project Management
 
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
