PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the position is to provide intellectual leadership within the subject group: to contribute to the enhancement of quality teaching and learning; and to strengthen the research quality and output by producing high quality publications.
Job description
1. Teaching and learning
· Offering quality teaching at undergraduate level. Supervising honours students. Supervising masters students. Developing module content. Completing T&L related administration. Participating in processes to enhance the quality of T&L in the subject group, school and faculty.
2. Research and innovation
· Publish peer reviewed, accredited journal articles in high-impact disciplinary journals. Publish monographs and book chapters with reputable academic publishers. Submit funding applications to stimulate and fund research initiatives. Present research in academic for such as conferences and workshops.
3. Community engagement
· Find meaningful opportunities to establish and continue community engagement initiatives that brings research and teaching into the service of community projects and development.
4. Academic citizenship
· Serve on editorial boards and academic association committees, participate in the external evaluation of assessments for other universities, and participate in peer review processes for academic publication.
5. Leadership in the NWU
· From time to time serve in subject and programme leadership positions as may become available.
Minimum requirements
· Qualification
Ø Master’s degree in Sociology.
· Experience/s
Ø 3 – 5 years of experience in direct and independent demonstrated record of T & L at undergraduate and post-graduate level at a reputable tertiary institution.
Ø 3 – 5 years of experience in direct and independent substantial record of quality publication in accredited disciplinary academic journals and/or in books published by reputable academic presses.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Computer literate in office tools
· Literate in the use of learning management systems in the tertiary education sector.
· Academic module and programme design.
· Higher education pedagogical approaches.
· Knowledge of funding systems and how to secure funding
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Must have the capacity to mentor senior students and junior colleagues.
· Must be able to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
· Must be able to work well with a diverse range of colleagues, students and stakeholders.
· Must be able to effectively resolve conflicts as may arrive in the workplace.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
