Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To take responsibility for the Potchefstroom Campus Radio Station and ensure the broadcasting of a variety
of quality programmes on a 24-hour basis.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. DEVELOPMENT AND APROVAL OF QUALITY PROGRAMMES:
· Use outcomes of research conducted to develop relevant programmes according to the listeners’ needs.
· Conduct research on target audience.
2. MANAGING RADIO STATION STAFF:
· Ensure the appointment of presenters and newsreaders.
· Conduct and oversee training and management of co-workers (student volunteers as well as volunteer team leaders).
· Conduct weekly meetings.
· Oversee the availability of presenters for each programme.
3. DEVELOP RADIO STATION TO BE SELF-SUSTAINABLE:
· Implement a third-stream income business model.
· Liaise with companies and other industries to secure advertisements and generate income for the Radio Station.
· Manage the income generated responsibly.
· Maintain / increase the listenership of the Radio Station.
4. ENSURING COMPLIANCE WITH REGUALTIONS:
· Manage the station according to the regulations laid down by ICASA and SAMRO and other regulatory bodies.
· Responsible for the renewal of the Campus Radio license.
5. MARKETING THE RADIO STATION:
· Conduct events and marketing campaigns that promote a healthy Student Life, academic success, and personal growth.
· Oversee and manage all physical marketing and branding materials of the Radio Station.
· Communicate and liaise with student structures.
6. MANAGEMENT OF WAPAD:
· Operational management and overseeing of NWU Potchefstroom Campus newspaper, including volunteer management and financial planning and management.
Minimum requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, Management, or related fields is essential.
· 4 years of experience in the development of Radio Stations and programmes.
· Experience in conducting and overseeing training and management of co-workers (student volunteers as well as volunteer team leaders).
· 4 years of experience in management of teams (management of students and skills development platforms) will be an advantage.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Ability to plan and develop quality Radio Station programmes which respond to the needs of the listeners – have knowledge of the radio market, different stations, and programme style.
· Ability to use different software packages relating to broadcasting, production, and music scheduling.
· Good writing skills for the Radio Station.
· Knowledge of applicable ethics and industry regulations around radio broadcast.
· Knowledge of technical aspects of broadcasting equipment.
· Ability to coach and develop talent in others.
· Knowledge of marketing and advertising within the radio industry will be an advantage.
· Good communication skills (verbal and written).
· Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
· Experience in a higher education environment will be an advantage.
· Good financial management skills.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
