Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Junior Assistant Catering Officer is responsible to assist with the management of the kitchen. To ensure the fluent and effective operation of the kitchen. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for quality control with regards to the following: correct storage of stock, food quality and portion control.
  • Planning of daily catering tasks.
  • Extensive knowledge of food preparation.
  • The general operation of a large scale food service kitchen.
  • Execution of administrative tasks.
  • Effective staff management which includes: training, discipline and conflict management, delegation and motivation of tasks.
  • Liaison with students, clients and suppliers.
  • Application of health and safety procedures.
  • Development of the own person and staying abreast of new products and technology.


Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12
  • 2 years’ experience in large scale food preparation
KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Must be able to work shifts
  • Experience in stock control and stock management
  • Knowledge in the handling and use of large scale equipment and –apparatus
  • Knowledge and execution of food safety legislation, standards and control
  • The ability to handle administrative tasks and basic computer skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills, must be client-service orientated
  • The ability to do physical work
  • The ability to identify and solve problems
  • The ability to work as part of a team and apply good time management

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
