Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To develop, implement and monitor safety management procedures and processes across campuses in line with the approved safety management policy; Plan and conducts safety management audits and develop action plans to improve safety management compliance across campuses and ensure synergies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Safety Management System
·         Develop and Implement and monitor the progress in the Safety management system in line with the latest legislation and policies, procedures and guidelines.
·         Engage various departments and faculties to assist them with safety management system and alignment.
2.    Incident investigations, audits and inspections plans
·         Prepare and update annual audit plan and reports of findings providing a high-level perspective of compliance by the NWU.
·         Prepare, implement and control inspection plans for safety coordinators.
·         Investigate incidents, report on findings and make formal recommendations and corrective measures to prevent re-occurrence.
3.    Monitoring and Reporting
·         Prepare monthly management reports, indicating deviations in respect of project schedules and budgets, as well as highlighting potential legal, safety and quality risks.
·         Issue quarterly reports summarising OHS risks, hazards and non-conformities. Compile and present OHS reports.
·         Review OHS policy, system, updates and implementation processes and ensure the changes are implemented correctly.
·         Develop, implement and review OHS system and Quality manual.
·         Formalise procedures and processes.
·         Assist with legal compliance responsibilities, appointments and rolling out of safety systems in various departments.
4.    Project Administration
·         Manage and oversee projects within the department and form part of professional teams from stage 1 to stage 6.
5.    Record Management and Emergency Preparedness
·         Ensure that all safety regulations, safety compliance are adhered to in all campuses and approval of safety and emergency preparedness.
·         Manage and improve the risk management process to ensure effective mitigation of risks through participation and providing guidance for Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, Management of Change, Incident and Accidents.
6.    Safety Administration
·         Preparation of safety reports and Safety administration and reporting.
       
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.

Minimum requirements

·         Bachelor’s degree (NQF7) in Safety Management and/or related field.
·         Postgraduate qualification (NQF 6) in Management.
·         Registration with SAMTRAC & SACPMP.
·         SAIOSH membership or equivalent.
·         Five (5) years’ proven operational experience as a Safety Management Officer, Specialist and/or Manager.
