Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
 
The person will be responsible for academic support to the Faculty of Health Sciences Ethics Office in the processing, approval and monitoring of all research ethics applications, as well as support to the chairpersons of the two Research Ethics Committees, researchers and postgraduate students of the Faculty of Health Sciences in all matters related to research ethics. The person will also ensure the maintenance of an environment in the Faculty of Health Sciences that is conducive to a high level of research integrity and quality research ethics. The person will be responsible for the support to the two NHREC-registered RECs (NWU-HREC [research involving human participants] and the NWU-AnimCareREC [research involving animals]) and ensure adherence to the NHREC legal requirements. The person will help in offering research ethics training to all researchers and postgraduate students of the Faculty as well as provide expert research ethics consultation services to them. The person will serve as member on several RECs as well as support the Ethics Office and Faculty leadership on all aspects pertaining to health research ethics. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
·        Academic support in the Faculty of Health Sciences Ethics Office, as well as to the chairpersons of the two NHREC-registered RECs chairpersons
·        Support of the two NHREC-registered RECs members
·        Offering research ethics training
·        Offering consultation services
·        Building of meaningful relationships with researchers and postgraduate students over campuses
·        Build research ethics networks
·        Conduct research within a research entity of own choice

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·        PhD Health Sciences
·        Postgraduate diploma/degree in health research ethics/bioethics (desirable)
·        Extensive knowledge of health research ethics
·        Two years’ experience of working in a health research ethics management environment (desirable)
·        Proof of serving on a health research ethics committee(s) for at least four years (essential)
·        Experience in providing health research ethics training (essential)
·        Two years’ experience as a research ethics consultant (desirable)
·        A history of national level involvement with research ethics (desirable)
·        A research profile showing proof of experience in research with a wide methodological knowledge base and a well-established publication record (essential)
·        Experience in interaction with senior and junior academic staff and postgraduate students (essential) 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·        Knowledge of the university, faculty, research units and various functions within the university system
·        Ethics office management
·        Data-base and record management
·        Computer literacy in MS Office Word, Excel (level 1 to 3), PowerPoint, internet and GroupWise

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
