NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFTSROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY: HEALTH SCIENCES DEPARTMENT: SCHOOL OF PSYSIOLOGY, NUTRITION & CONSUMER SCIENCES VACANCY: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER PEROMNES NUMBER: A6/A7/A8 POSITION NUMBER: P000409 PERMANENT-FULL TIME Purpose of the position: The Lecturer/Senior lecturer/Associate Professor should be able to: • Implement effective lecturing of all human physiology modules using a blended learning approach and relevant technology. • Show leadership and innovation in research and teaching-learning excellence. • Participate in activities in physiology, related to teaching-learning and research (including funding applications, team leader, committee work, etc.). For Associate Professor level research in the field of Human Cardiovascular physiology is a pre-requisite. • Promote personal and professional development and student guidance. • Assist with the implementation of strategies regarding physiology for the adapted undergraduate and honours programs. • Supervise post-graduate students on the relevant level (Lecturer- hons and MSc; Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor- all levels up to PhD)
Job description

Functional/Technical competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
 
  • Clear evidence of strength in teaching and learning in a blended environment and research and innovation activity.
  • Knowledge, skills, and practical experience in the field of Physiology with an interest in a suitable field of Human Physiology and or Teaching/Learning research
  • Excellent problem-solving skills regarding the key performance areas.
  •  Computer literacy in Windows MS Office, use of e-mail and internet as well as a program for statistical analysis of data.
  •  Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability of language skills to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU.

Recommendations
 
A track record of research activity, including refereed publications and postgraduate student supervision- (A8)- 1 MSc delivered (A7)- 2 MSc and 1 PhD delivered (A6)- 3-4 MSc and 3-4 PhD delivered.

Minimum requirements

  • Undergraduate qualification: BSc hons OR equivalent 4-year degree (NQF 8) Human Physiology as major
  • Postgraduate: MSc (for Lecturer) and PhD (for senior lecturer) PhD and suitable profile (according to NWU promotion criteria) for Associate Professor- General Human Physiology (for lecturer) and Cardiovascular Physiology (for senior lecturer) NQF 9/10
  • Proof of applicable experience in an academic and research area *
  • Proof related to lecturing physiology/physiology theory and practice (face to face, blended)*
  • Use of LMS, online platforms, teaching-learning technologies
  • Proven sound practical experience and/or service delivery in the field of physiology. Cardiovascular physiology experience will serve as an advantage for Associate professor level*
  • A demonstrated (proof of dates and activities) commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to engage with students’ educational development and welfare.*
  • Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment, which can be proven
  • The desire to continue to learn and improve as an effective academic
  • Level of professional and ethical conduct indicated in a letter from any recent employer or referee.
  • Societies/councils in the relevant fields of higher education and cardiovascular research, for example the International Society of Hypertension, South African Heart Association, Health Professions Council of South Africa, Physiology Society of South Africa, etc. - (Lecturer: at least 1 membership) (Senior Lecturer: at least 2 memberships) (Associate Professor: 3 or more memberships)

Responsibilities:

1.     Teaching-Learning and community involvement
  •       Apply advanced knowledge, skills and competencies in physiology and effective teaching-learning practices in the broader field of physiology.
  •       Use advanced skills to design, develop, evaluate, and improve study guides and curricula as the need arises
  •       Demonstrate advanced lecturing and practical skills in physiology
  •       Conduct assessments (formal, informal, practical) on undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and give feedback to students
  •       Participate and show leadership in teaching-learning development and innovation processes within the University boundaries.
  •       Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups, and organisations at local, national, and international levels.
  •       Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external to the university.
  •       Complete any ad-hoc assignments given by line manager (school director), within the scope of practice.
  •       Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in teaching learning.

2.     Leadership, management, and service to the university
  •        Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees, any other relevant committees as requested by the line manager and working parties within the University.
  •    Relate to administrative or representative responsibilities in, or on behalf of, the NWU (involvement will be determined by the level of the position). This normally include delegated administrative, marketing or planning work successfully undertaken in the University, relevant faculty, school or discipline, capacity building, mentoring, administrative or representative responsibilities discharged elsewhere in the University, including leadership or participation in academic or professional organisations, including relevant contributions to the wider community; and/or public representations on behalf of the University in an official or professional capacity, enhancement of the image of the University with inter alia prospective students, employers of graduates, professional bodies and the community


3.     Research and community involvement
  •    Purposefully develop own focused research expertise in physiology related teaching-learning or epidemiology/public health/interventional research relevant to the future of the Physiology department or Hypertension in Africa Research Team. Associate Professor level should give special attention to the study of Cardiovascular Physiology.
  •        Identify or formulate research problems and researchable questions in the applicable field of interest.
  •        Design and conduct research projects write research reports and prepare applications for research funding.
  •        Communicate research outcomes to experts through publishing in accredited refereed journals, scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences if possible.
  •        Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research.
  •        Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups, and organisations at local, national, and international levels.
  •        Actively participate in teaching-learning research in the field of expertise as part of the development of an academic profession for example Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research (SoTL), other T&L research opportunities available through CTL, UCDG, etc.
4.     Social responsiveness
  •       Maintain involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through which general physiological knowledge and skills are applied to consequential problems of cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases in South Africa and the world beyond the University.
  •        Communicate appropriately and effectively with internal and external (community) role players.
  •        Embrace engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic engagement involving students’ community service, and professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise.
  •        Execute activities by which discipline-based skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community.
