Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
·         The Junior Educational Technologist role is a team-centred position responsible for, under supervision of the Senior Educational Technologists, researching, investigating and reviewing of the educational application of technology to enhance T&L and to create and maintain an enabling DTLE at the NWU through proper learning experience design within the digital teaching and learning environment. As Jnr Educational technologist the staff member will provide learning design and technical assistance with the implementation of teaching and learning technologies. The Jnr Educational Technologist position requires an individual to work with a high level of independence, have a sense of instructional design principles and theories, have strong project management, communication and collaboration skills and a willingness to provide superior customer service. The individual should also have a passion for innovative educational solutions to enhance the teaching and learning experience of academic staff and students.

·         Essential duties/responsibilities:
  • Provide instructional design (learning design) and technical assistance within the Learning Management System to enhance the learning experience of students in a fully online, hybrid and in-person programmes/modules
  • Provide third line technical assistance to academic staff in the use of integrated e-learning tools (i.e., eFundi, Turn-it-in, Panopto etc.)
  • Implement a quality assurance review of new programmes/modules and recommended and recommend to academic staff
  • Liaison with IT partner to solve recurring technical problems
  • Manage and complete learning design projects within a specified timeframe while prioritising and working on multiple projects simultaneously

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·         Bachelor’s degree in Educational Technology/ Curriculum design or related fields in education

RECOMMENDATION
·         Honours degree in Instructional Design in Learning, Design and Technology

EXPERIENCE:
·         3 years’ experience in developing web-based applications and related technologies
·         2 years’ demonstrable experience as a Learning Designer, Instructional Designer, or Curriculum Developer

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Demonstrable experience as a Learning Designer, Instructional Designer, or Curriculum Developer.
·         Solid knowledge of contemporary educational strategies
·         Good knowledge of and ability to investigate the educational application of technology
·         Proficiency in at least two official languages

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Learning design in an online environment to enhance the teaching experience of lecturers as well as the learning experience of students:
·         Learning design projects according to faculty plans and requests from T&L committees in faculties
·         Consult with lecturers to understand teaching & learning requirements and scope to design innovative blended learning activities, incorporating new learning technologies and learning theories with the aim to enhance students’ learning experience
·         Advising lecturers on the best digital solution(s) for their T&L need(s) to enhance the teaching experience of lecturers as well as the learning experience of students
·         Record keeping on all T&L design activities (including satisfaction rates) for reporting purposes
·         Learning design projects managed and delivered on time
·         Build personal relationships with lecturers during consultation and execution of learning design projects

2.    Research, investigate, review (and advise on) the educational application of technology to enhance T&L:
·         Development of best practice guidelines w.r.t technology enhanced T&L – in collaboration with stakeholders
·         Participation DTLE identified projects (see project list)

3.    Professional and Personal Development:
·         Personal development as set out on Personal Development Plan
·         Network and collaborate with stakeholder, internally, nationally and internationally, to share innovative ideas/best practises/trends to regarding the integration of technology into T&L strategies

4.    Staff and student development and support regarding the effective implementation of the T&L environment at the NWU:
·         Participate in Continuous Professional Development (dates to be determined on CPD calendar) at the NWU by
·         Presenting/co-presenting CPD opportunities regarding Teaching with Technology
·         Develop training material for the CPD opportunities presented
·         Record keeping on all activities (including satisfaction rates) for reporting purposes
·         Training material up to date and available for each training session
·         Training opportunities planned and scheduled

5.    Ad Hoc:
·         To be managed with line manager
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
