Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of this position is to provide efficient management regarding all interpreting functions related to the implementation of the NWU language policy and related plans.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·        A relevant degree in Applied Linguistics or Language Education (language planning, language practice, language education, applied linguistics, interpreting general linguistics or similar relevant field) is essential.
·        A relevant honours degree in Applied Linguistics and Language Education (language planning, language practice, language education, applied linguistics, interpreting general linguistics or similar relevant field) is desirable.
 
EXPERIENCE/S:
·        At least 5 years overall experience in language practice is essential.
·        2 years’ experience managing language facilitation services or interpreting services is essential.
·        2 years’ experience managing the implementation of Language Policy and Plan (LPP) or multilingual language policies is essential.
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
·        Knowledge of educational interpreting
·        Managing of language facilitation services
·        Managing of the implementation of LPP
·        Managing and facilitating of the interpreting budget
·        Multilingual competency in a number of official South African languages (besides English and Afrikaans) relevant to the NWU environment
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·        Good interpersonal relationships
·        Good verbal and written communication skills in several official South African languages relevant to the NWU environment
·        Multilingual language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETING SERVICES (EIS):
·        Implement and oversee the rendering of EIS at various sites of delivery, internal and external
·        Refine the system to a more non-stressful one. Put effective structures in place
·        Continuously support of Interpreters.
2.    LOGISTICS, STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION:
·        Implement and manage logistics, staff, and administration
·        Revise the existing logistical system to implement more practical systems and methods.
·        Day to day Team building improves the quality
3.    INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION:
·        Manages the total internal and external communication process
·        E-mails
·        Assessment criteria.
·        Compiling feedback reports.
·        Meetings with various levels of management.
4.    TQM PROCESS OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES:
·        Continuous development of best-practice methods for the sake of the continuous improvement of service delivery
·        Effective administration processes and systems to ensure quality service delivery.
·        Regular meetings with interpreters.
 
5.    DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES:
·        Manage day to day activities/reporting of subordinates of EIS
·        Continue the present communication process and refine where necessary
 
6.    FINANCES AND BUDGET:
·        Manages the finances and budget of EIS
·        Planning, determining and administration of the budget
 
7.    COMMERCIALISATION:
·        Market and further training and development of interpreters beyond EIS
·        Liaison with external clients and placement of interpreters for assignments
       
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
