PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This position is located in the office of the Deputy Dean Teaching and Learning, and the successful candidate will be expected to support the Deputy Dean, Teaching and Learning by developing and managing specific projects intended to realise the Faculty strategic objectives across the duration of the appointment.
The successful applicant will thus support the Faculty strategy by leading the operationalisation of the Faculty’s Strategic Plan; Integrated Teaching and Learning plan; Language Plan; and various guiding documents in order to accelerate developments in the following key areas:
• Multilingual pedagogies: (The Faculty places great value on students’ home languages as key to student access and success and has developed a Language Plan which is in the initial phase of implementation).
• Curriculum Transformation: (Advancing decolonisation and Africanisation to foreground African knowledge systems in dialogue with other international knowledge systems to ensure curriculum that is relevant and addresses current needs).
This position will be a two-year contract appointment with specific required outcomes.
Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide Strategic Support in Teaching & Learning and other strategic imperatives
· Work with the Deputy Dean Teaching and Learning to conceptualise, lead and manage projects for the implementation of the Faculty Teaching and Learning plan in line with the Faculty Strategic Plan. The Faculty of Humanities Teaching and Learning Plan defines key strategic developments in the areas of quality enhancement, multilingualism and curriculum transformation to be prioritised in the following two years.
· Provide strategic support in Teaching and Learning support for students and staff in the Faculty.
· Oversee and manage events for the Teaching and Learning function.
· Assist in the curriculum development, transformation and expansion.
· Advancing Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and research projects with colleagues,
· Identify and manage possible research projects for Teaching and Learning and collaboration with various partners.
· Identify possible sources of funding or grants for research-based projects and outcomes.
· Enrich curriculum development and create a scholarly framework to support and inform that process.
· Guide the development of innovative educational responses to the challenges of the South African context through a decoloniality lens.
· Guide the Faculty implementation of the Language plan.
2. Strategic Relationship Building
· Work in collaboration with the Deputy Dean to develop, promote and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholder and other committees.
· Meet with and contact stakeholders to support the Teaching and Learning portfolio by building diverse communities of practice.
· Build relationships with possible funders of student bursaries and other strategic educational initiatives.
3. Administration and other tasks
· Responsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above.
· Implementation of the Faculty language plan
· Implementation of the integrated teaching and learning plan
Minimum requirements
· PhD Degree
· Publication Record in the scholarship of teaching and learning
· Project & Finance Management experience
· Understanding of national policy on SA Higher Education and matters.
· 5 years Academic experience with a demonstrable record of leadership and collaboration in curriculum renewal, transformation and quality enhancement.
ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:
· Strategic management and leadership skills
· Experience and training in key areas of curriculum design and Higher Education pedagogies.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Sound understanding of contemporary scholarship on curriculum design, decolonisation and evaluation
· Understanding of contemporary approaches to multilingualism in Higher Education.
· Sound understanding of the Higher Education quality frameworks and quality assurance practices.
· Ability to lead by example and inspire confidence.
· Ability to mobilise and inspire diverse teams towards shared goals.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, negotiation skills, persuasive skills, good interpersonal skills, and well-reasoned decision-making ability.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
