NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: FINANCE AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT: RESIDENCE AND CATERING POSITION NUMBER: P001823 and P001776 VACANCY: ASSISTANT CATERING OFFICER PEROMNES GRADE: 14 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT B-BBEE: EMPLOYMENT EQUITY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Staff member is responsible in assistance to the Chefs and Head Chef for the daily operations in the kitchen of the NWU Sports Village which include preparation of food of a high standard, ensuring all the guidelines are followed in the kitchen regarding OHS regulations, menu planning and stock taking

ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:
·       A Tertiary qualification in catering in the Hospitality Sector
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Must be able to work shifts and weekends
·       Flexibility, creativity and organized
·       Experience in stock taking
·       Experience in the preparation of a la cart as well as buffet meals
·       Experience in food regulations and OHS regulations
·       Valid Driver’s License
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Good interpersonal relations
·       Self-motivation and sound judgement
·       The ability to apply effective time management
·       The ability to do physical work
·       Demonstration of language proficiency to function in the various multilingual environments of the NWU

Minimum requirements

·       Grade 12
·       3 Years ‘experience in the preparation of food in the Hospitality Sector
 
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.        Catering       
·     Planning of daily catering tasks in cooperation with Chef
·     Physical preparation of food according to menus
·     Communication of daily planning to subordinates
·     Responsible for timeous preparation of quality meals
·     Responsible for preparation and setting up of serving area
·     Supervise at the serving area during mealtimes
·     See to it that subordinate staff clean and keep kitchen area, equipment, stores, and fridges tidy

 
2.        Quality Control           
·     Responsible for neatness, hygiene, and quality service at the serving area
·     Application of portion control and the serving of food at the serving area
·     Personally, responsible for ensuring that food is tastefully garnished before it is served
·     Ensure that all public areas appear neat and acceptable
·     Assist with monthly stock take
·     Continuously ensure that equipment is in good working order
 

3.        General Operations                    
·     Responsible for the day-to-day operations of kitchen assisting the Head Chef and Chefs
·     Delegate only selected tasks to subordinates and assume responsibility of the position
·     Providing relief duty where necessary
 
4.        Liaison
·     Internal with colleagues
·     External with clients
·     Always present a positive image
 
5.        Administration
·     Ensuring that all OHS regulations are adhered to in the kitchen
·     Meets all OHS standards
·     Add knowledge to the development of new menus
 
6.        Personal Development
·     Staying informed of the latest technology and methods in the catering industry
·     Attending relevant courses
 
 
 
 
       
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
