PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To support the Vice-Chancellor and the senior management team to ensure strategy alignment and implementation throughout all business units of the organization.
Job description
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategy Development:
• Co-determine and develop institutional strategy and joint accountability for implementation success
• Direct office operations and ensure effective and efficient service delivery to stakeholders (both internal and external) from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor; by liaising with stakeholders to ensure organisational objectives are achieved.
• Demonstrate thought leadership in strategic and design thinking in the industry
• Represent NWU in relevant forums in industry, councils or committees in the public sector, statutory and professional bodies to initiate national debate, influence policy and regulatory matters and shape public opinion.
Leadership, Transformation, Governance and Compliance:
• Assist the Vice Chancellor in developing and managing the transformation of the university into a sustainable unitary multi-campus university within an effective management system.
• Uphold to the Higher Education Act and ensure that an institutional plan is developed, updated and executed efficiently and effectively.
• Corporate governance conformance. reporting and risk management
• Provide continuous support to the senior management team to ensure establishment and implementation of strategy goals and strategic culture.
• Ensure that responsibilities, accountability and authority of the senior management team are clear, understood, and assist the Vice-Chancellor in monitoring the implementation of strategic objectives.
Operational Management:
• Lead in efforts to improve operational excellence for senior leadership team
• Ensure that the senior management team maintain situational awareness of issues and operational information relevant to the core business.
• Lead and direct operational planning, performance and quality ensuring alignment between division/faculty plans with the overall NWU plan
• Oversee and manage utilisation of resources and finances as allocated by the Vice Chancellor.
Communicate Engage, Build and Maintain Strategic Relations:
• Maintain, build and promote strategic relations with key stakeholder.
• Communicate effectively with both the internal and external environment of the university.
• Adhere to and promote the value system of the university.
• Integrate communications, monitor and direct the development of a greater NWU brand equity.
• Co-ordinate teams in the implementation of critical strategic goals on a project basis.

Minimum requirements
· A Master’s degree in the appropriate academic discipline (NQF Level 9)
· A Doctoral degree is desirable
· Ten (10) years’ experience in leadership and strategy management at senior level.
Other competency requirements:
Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
· Working knowledge of management principles, strategic planning, project management and human resource management.
· Knowledge of the higher education regulatory environment.
· Working knowledge of information technologies utilised by the university that can be leveraged to assist strategic planning and implementation.
Behavioural Competencies
· Excellent analytical and written and verbal communication skills.
· Work independently and prioritize work.
· Establish and co-ordinate cross-functional teams to achieve strategic business objectives.
· Maintain objectivity and rationality in responding to internal and external conditions affecting strategic goal attainment.
