Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To increase research output, supervise postgraduate students, develop capacity of junior and inexperienced researchers, obtain research grants/funding, and develop and teach postgraduate qualifications and short learning programmes aligned with the strategic plan of the North-West University and the research focus area the Occupational Hygiene and Health Research Initiative (OHHRI).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. RESEARCH PUBLICATION:
· Publish peer reviewed articles, books, and chapters in books in journals and books recognised by the Department of Higher Education and Training
2. POSTGRADUATE SUPERVISION:
· Provide supervision to postgraduate students of OHHRI
3. RESEARCH FUNDING:
· Write research grants (national and international) and industry research funding applications to secure research funding
4. POSTGRADUATE QUALIFICATION AND SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHING:
· Develop and present/teach postgraduate qualifications and short learning programmes relevant to OHHRI
5. ACADEMIC ADMINISTATION:
· Complete academic administrative tasks associated with research, postgraduate supervision, staff capacity and personal development, postgraduate qualification and short learning programme development and presentation
6. STAFF CAPACITY AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:
· Participate in research capacity development of junior and inexperienced researchers in OHHRI as well as personal development through improvement of own research profile and obtaining National Research Foundation or equivalent rating
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· PhD (Doctoral degree) in Occupational Hygiene or Occupational Health or Ergonomics or Toxicology or a related field of science
· Master’s degree in Occupational Hygiene (at senior lecturer level)
· Professional registration in Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH, at least at Technologist level) or the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA, as a Certified Professional Ergonomist or Certified Ergonomist Associate) or South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP, as a Toxicologist)
· Occupational Hygiene/Occupational Health/Ergonomics/Toxicology Societies membership
EXPERIENCE/S:
· Expert and specialist in Occupational Hygiene or Occupational Health or Ergonomics or Toxicology at an
advanced level
· Research methodology, study design, statistical analyses and interpretation at an advanced level
· Professional registration with SAIOH or ESSA or SACNASP (or an equivalent thereof)
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Knowledge of utility accounts and related verification process
· Ability to capturing accounts on an electronic system.
· Ability to develop and maintain an electronic and hard copy record management system.
· Ability to liaise with stakeholders.
· Ability to draft reports and budget reports based on data from a system.
· Computer literacy and intermediate knowledge of University software and systems.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Research publication of peer reviewed articles, books, and chapters in books in journals and books recognised by the Department of Higher Education and Training. A minimum of two recognised publication outputs for applicant with only a Master’s in Occupational Hygiene.
· Postgraduate supervision at masters and/or doctoral level
· Evidence of securing research grants and/or industry research funding
· Computer software skills including word processing, academic presentation, and statistical software
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
