Job description
Professional Development
· Organise student support and development opportunities in a blended mode through systematic thematic seminar series on effective learning, including teaching and learning research to inform best practices.
· Advance student academic access and improve student academic retention and success through student academic development and support initiatives.
Student Profiling
· Using transformative learning as a response to cognitive justice for the student voice in the pedagogy of teaching and learning processes, invite students as co-creators of the teaching and learning processes through observations and reflection.
· Enhance the quality of teaching and learning support to Faculties by the Centre for Teaching and Learning by co-organising pedagogic conversations informed by student and academic staff realities informed by NWU teaching modalities.
· Focus is on retention through knowledge and skills development of students.
Academic Advising
· Provide individual academic advising to walk-in or referred students.
· Provide academic development and support opportunities to groups of students in the form of workshops / webinars.
· Where necessary, refer students to Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders, academic peer mentors, tutors, and/or reading development.
· Collaboration with other student support departments (e.g. Student Counselling and Development: Social work services; Disability Rights Unit (DRU); and so on).
· Liaise and collaborate with faculties on referrals.
· Record keeping.
Academic coordination
· Coordination of Supplemental Instruction programme in the Potchefstroom campus and ensure students enrolled in identified at-risk modules where Supplemental Instruction facilitation is offered have a better understanding of the coursework.
· As SI Campus Coordinator assist in the marketing, recruitment, and appointment process of SI leaders as well as train and offer continuous support to SI leaders throughout each semester.
· Supply timely feedback and reports on the SI Programme’s progress and impact as requested by the various role-players.
· Collaborate with other SI campus coordinators and the NWU Programme Coordinator on developing new initiatives and delivery modes within the SI programme to improve the student experience and reduce drop-out rate.
· Coordination of Reading Development programme in the Potchefstroom campus and ensure students participating in Achieve3000 have a better understanding of reading and writing for academic purposes.
· Marketing of SI and Reading Development programmes.
· Ensure academic success of students who are enrolled in contact undergraduate at-risk modules.
Research
· Collaborate with fellow Student Development coordinators in conducting research and publication, and to research on student academic development programmes more generally.
REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications:
· Hons / PGDip (NQF Level 8)
· Master’s Degree an advantage
Experience:
· 2-years’ experience in supporting student academic development in a Higher Education context is essential
· 2 years’ experience in the development of online for student academic development is essential
Essential competencies:
Functional/Technical Competencies (Knowledge)
· Knowledge of and experience in action, qualitative research, quantitative research and mixed method research with regard to teaching and learning.
· Some knowledge on coordinating a student’s development programme, or coordinating capacity in general
· Individual and group student advising.
· Rendering faculty as well as student support.
· Reporting and liaising.
· Computer skills (MS Office).
· Planning and development.
· Development of online student academic development and support resources.
Behavioural Competencies
· Good interpersonal and communication skills.
· Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
· Client and team oriented.
· Attention to detail, and accuracy in data handling.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines
