Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a department, school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and learning

  • Teaching of modules in B.Ed., PGCE and B.Ed. Hons on contact and distance mode in a multimodal environment.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions, and studio sessions.
  • Initiation and development of subject material.

Research and Innovation

  • The conduct of research.
  • Involvement in professional activity.
  • Supervision of post-graduate students; publish in accredited journals, proceedings, or chapters in books.

Community Engagement

  • Initiate and manage community engagement projects.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD  in Mathematics Education (NQF level 10).
  • A BSc or B.Ed degree with Mathematics as a major subject up to level 3 (NQF level 7).
  • A Professional Teacher’s Qualification.
  • Supervision of master’s students to completion or co-supervision of PHD students.
  • Publication of articles in accredited journals.
  • A minimum of 3 (three) years’ applicable teaching experience in School and/or higher education in Mathematics and /or Mathematics Education.

Added Advantage:

  • Professional registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).

Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)

  • Fundamental knowledge of Mathematical concepts to teach Mathematics content models for undergraduate B.Ed and Hons students.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), email and internet.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • Research outputs: Publications, supervision and/or other research activity.
  • Applications for research funding for projects.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

Key Behavioural Competencies:

  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.

REMUNERATION

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
