AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY AWAITS AT THE NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) WITHIN THE FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES, WITHIN THE CENTRE FOR SPACE RESEARCH, FOR AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER (HIGH-ENERGY ASTROPHYSICS) VACANCY, POSITION NUMBER: P000886, GRADED AT PEROMNES A6/A7. THE PURPOSE OF THE JOB IS TO PROVIDE RESEARCH AND POSTGRADUATE TEACHING DUTIES IN THE CENTRE FOR SPACE RESEARCH (CSR).
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

·          Conduct and supervise research projects as required

·          Quality assurance and management of research outputs by staff and students

·          Recommend and guide academic development and capacity building to improve research outputs and manage and coordinate research grants and NRF ratings

·          Drive and grow international collaboration

·          Conduct own research and publication and maintain academic scholarship

·          Support engaged research in the faculty

 

 TEACHING & LEARNING

·          Teach postgraduate courses as required

·          Uphold a high standard of teaching and learning

·          Actively drive the development of current and new courses where needed

·          Quality assurance and management of teaching outputs

·          Drive and manage teaching and learning productivity and outputs

·          Enable technology and new developments to enhance the offering of courses

·          Manage and partake in student communication and support activities

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

·          Participate in community engagement activities

 

MANAGEMENT

·          Develop, initiate and drive research proposals for external funding

·          Embark on innovative independent initiatives to obtain funding, facilities and/or equipment to enable research output

·          Collaborate and build effective relationships for successful delivery

·          Participate in relevant management committees of the subject group

Minimum requirements

 

  •          A PhD (NQF 10) in Astrophysics / Astronomy.
  •         A minimum of 3 years’ (2 years for senior lecturer) teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  •          A minimum of 3 years’ (2 years for senior lecturer) postgraduate supervision and training experience.
  •          A minimum of 5 years’ (3 years for senior lecturer) experience as an active researcher.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  •          Proven track record of postgraduate student supervision.
  •          Proven track record of successfully applying for research funding.
  •        Leadership and outreach (community engagement) expertise.
  •          Research interest and proven track record of research excellence in high-energy / multi-wavelength / multi-messenger astrophysics.
  •          NRF rating would be ideal.

 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  •          Excellent problem-solving skills.
  •          Excellent computer skills.
  •          Knowledge of the higher education system.
  •           Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU.
